Element K overview
What:
- Element K is a tool that provides mini-courses in most of the software packages supported by the University, including Microsoft Office (both Windows and Mac versions), Windows, GroupWise, Microsoft FrontPage and Internet Explorer.
New courses are added continually to reflect the
latest versions of software. The new courses are
automatically available to those with Element K
licenses.
- Web-based: Element K courses can be accessed from an office, a student computing lab, a dormitory or any off-campus location with an Internet connection.
- Interactive: The courses include self-grading quizzes and hands-on exercises providing feedback on your performance
- Self-paced: Access the courses at any time of night or day, for as long or as little as you like. Element K "remembers" the lessons you've completed, so that when you log in the next time you can easily pick up where you left off.
- Multimedia-enhanced: The courses include graphics, animations and sound.
How to use it:
- Take a complete course on an application. Element K offers you the choice of taking a brief test to assess your knowledge of the application; test results are used to compile a list of recommended lessons, so that you don't waste time on topics you've already mastered
- Get a quick overview of an application. Element K allows you to browse lesson topics and choose the one that suits you.
- Get help for a specific task. Comprehensive menus and search capability allow you to quickly focus on information needed for the job at hand. For instance: sorting data in Excel
- Use Element K in combination with other learning resources. Depending on your learning style and interests, Element K may not serve all of your technology education needs. Most users will find it appropriate to blend use of Element K courses with review of on-line documentation, browsing books available for checkout at Leyburn Library, participating in instructor-led workshops and using other resources
Who can use it:
- Any faculty member, staff member or student at W&L.
Accounts are automatically set up for these
constituencies; see details
Why:
- Some people prefer to learn on their own, rather than in a group, instructor-led environment.
- Element K is a useful resource in keeping skills current in a rapidly changing technology environment. You can access courses whenever you need them, providing "just-in-time" learning.
